Garnering support from industry leaders, Adobe has announced new Flash Player 10.1 for smartphones, smartbooks, netbooks, PCs and other Internet-connected devices.

Adobe has announced Flash Player 10.1 software for smartphones, smartbooks, netbooks, PCs and other Internet-connected devices. A public developer beta of the browser-based runtime is expected to be available for Windows Mobile, Palm webOS and desktop operating systems including Windows, Macintosh and Linux later this year. Public betas for Google Android and Symbian OS are expected to be available in early 2010.

In addition, Adobe and RIM announced a joint collaboration to bring Flash Player to Blackberry smartphones, and Google joined close to 50 other industry players in the Open Screen Project initiative.

Adobe Flash Player 10.1 is said to be the first consistent runtime release of the Open Screen Project that enables Web browsing of expressive applications, content and high definition (HD) videos across devices.

“Using the Web programming model of the Flash Platform, the browser-based runtime enables millions of designers and developers to reuse code and assets and reduce the cost of creating, testing and deploying content across different operating systems and browsers. Flash Player 10.1 is easily updateable across all supported platforms to ensure rapid adoption of new innovations that move the Web forward,” the company explained.

The browser-based runtime leverages the power of the graphics processing unit (GPU) for accelerated video and graphics while conserving battery life and minimising resource utilisation. New mobile-ready features that take advantage of native device capabilities include support for multi-touch, gestures, mobile input models, accelerometer and screen orientation. Flash Player 10.1 will also take advantage of media delivery with HTTP streaming, including integration of content protection powered by Adobe Flash Access 2.0. This effort, code-named Zeri, will be an open format based on industry standards and will provide content publishers, distributors and partners the tools they need to utilise HTTP infrastructures for high-quality media delivery in Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR 2.0 software.

“With Flash Player moving to new mobile platforms, users will be able to experience virtually all Flash technology based Web content and applications wherever they are,” said David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president, platform business unit, Adobe. “We are excited about the broad collaboration of close to 50 industry leaders in the Open Screen Project and the ongoing collaboration with 19 out of the top 20 handset manufacturers worldwide. It will be great to see first devices ship with full Flash Player in the first half of next year.”

“Motorola is excited to be one of the first handset manufacturers to ship Android-based devices with Flash Player support early next year,” said Christy Wyatt, vice president, software applications and ecosystem, Motorola.

“As a long-time partner of Adobe, and more than 400 million Nokia phones shipped with existing Flash technology to date, we are excited to see Flash Player becoming a reality for mobile phones and other mobile devices,” said Purnima Kochikar, vice president, Forum Nokia. “Nokia is excited about full Flash Player coming to devices and we are committed to supporting Flash Player 10.1 on mobile devices in 2010.”

A day after Microsoft’s Courier concept (a double-screen tablet) leaked and surprised many with its coolness, Redmond rumors hit the snooze bar again with leaked images of two new Microsoft-branded phones. The images are supposed to be concepts of two handsets, codenamed Turtle and Pure, that are part of Microsoft’s secret “Project Pink.” The device images were leaked late Wednesday courtesy of gadget blog Gizmodo, which also broke the Courier story earlier this week.

Pink Rumors

Some of the rumors coming out with the new images match things we’ve heard before. Turtle and Pure are said to be the work of engineers from Danger–the makers of the Sidekick handset–which Microsoft acquired last year. The Pink phones may have Zune-like software or at the very least will access the online Zune Marketplace for music, videos, and other content. Microsoft designed the hardware, but it will be manufactured by Sharp–the company that also made some of the Sidekick phones. Turtle and Pure handsets will feature the Microsoft and Sharp brand names.

Danger Plays it Safe

Microsoft’s Pink phone (from Gizmodo)

Judging by the photos, it doesn’t look like the Danger folks were gunning for originality when they signed on with Microsoft. The handset that I assume is called Turtle looks like a smaller version of the Palm Pre, and Pure is just a regular slider phone with round edges. Gizmodo says Microsoft designed these phones for the younger set, just like Danger did with the Sidekick. Sure, T-Mobile’s new Sidekick LX sports Exchange support, and maybe the Pink phones will too, but Turtle and Pure are supposed to be about entertainment and fun, not business.

No word on pricing yet or what any of the specs will be, but it sounds like these phones are getting close to production, and may hit store shelves in a few months. Until then, let me know what you think of Microsoft’s stab at the multimedia smartphone.

Ooh, now here’s a not entirely unexpected story. Android, as we all know, is an open source phone OS, which theoretically means lots of phones can use it, from top-end smartphones (Sony Ericsson Rachael, anyone?) to low-enders aimed at the mass market. So far, though, we’ve only seen Android pop up in relatively high-end smartphones.

However, Android is, by definition, a smartphone OS, so basically any phone you put it in is automatically a smartphone, even if it’s a dirt cheap one. That leads on to the intriguing possibility of having entry-level smartphones, phones that do what the top-enders do, but are aimed at the low, mass market end of the spectrum. Smartphones that sell in bulk, basically.

Well according to Slashgear, that may be exactly what we’re seeing here, in the shape of the HTC Click.

And let’s be honest, the fact it looks like the baby brother to the HTC Magic (albeit with a D-pad instead of a trackball, which would tie in with the notion of a cheaper smartphone) only serves to reinforce that idea. Now, of course, this is only a rumour at the minute, but if it’s a hoax, or it’s not the genuine article, than it’s a frighteningly good fake. If I had a reputation, I’d stake it on the HTC Click being the genuine article.

So, what’s the point of the HTC Click? Is it to give people who wouldn’t otherwise have a smartphone the chance to own one? Or is it (and I suspect this is the real reason why Android is Open Source) because Google want in on every market segment, from top-enders to mass market bulk phones?

But anyway, yes, this is a rumour at the moment, but don’t be surprised if it turns out to be true…

Ah-ha! Finally! Do you know how long I’ve been waiting to try Firefox (or Fennec, as the mobile version’s still currently called) on my phone? Ages, that’s how long. Sure, there was a version of it earlier in the year, but you had to have a Touch Pro to try it out at the time. Which was annoying, because I haven’t.

However, Mozilla have released a new ‘alpha2′ version of Firefox, or Fennec Alpha 2, or whatever they’re calling it this week, and now, anyone with a Windows Mobile phone can try it out for themselves!

Well, I pretty much had to download it, didn’t I…

So, the big question is, what’s it like? Well, the ‘alpha2′ bit should give you a clue that it’s a really early version. So it’s slow, unresponsive, hasn’t been in the slightest bit optimised, and is generally a bit of an anticlimax.

Will it be fixed before release? Oh yes.

Will it, therefore, when it does get a final release, be any good?

That’s the question, isn’t it? When it does go on general release, will the holy grail of mobile browsers (as a lot of people have alluded to it being) actually be much cop? Well, I’ll be frank, yes, the alpha version isn’t that great. It clearly needs a hell of a lot more work doing to it, but one thing is for certain: when they do get it fully optimised, mobile Firefox is going to be a stunning web browser. The controls seem broadly similar to Opera Mobile, the one I use now, with features like double tap to zoom, and full kinetic scrolling (the one where you swipe your finger and the page keeps scrolling, before slowing to a stop, with real world physics, and everything).

One thing it has that Opera Mobile doesn’t, though, is the superb range of add-ons that makes Firefox the superb browser that it is. Yep, that’s right, the mobile version will have add-ons as well, and when they get the usability issues sorted out (which they will, because this is still a very early version), Firefox on your mobile phone is going to be brilliant.

But will it beat Opera Mobile?

Arrrrrrrrgh, I can’t decide! I can’t make my mind up, between the two, which’ll be better! We’re just gonna have to wait and see…

The company said in February it’s committed to bringing the full version to Google (NSDQ: GOOG)’s Android, Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)’s Windows Mobile, Nokia (NYSE: NOK)’s S60 Symbian, and Palm’s webOS.

“We are bringing Flash Player 10 to smartphone-class devices to enable the latest Web browsing experience,” Adobe CEO Shantanu Naraye said during an investor call. “Multiple partners have already received early versions of this release and we expect to release a beta version for developers at our MAX Conference in October.”The move could open up tens of millions of devices for Flash developers and content creators, as well as give consumers a richer mobile Internet experience. Adobe has created the Open Screen Project to help it achieve its goal of creating a standard platform that can be used on desktops, mobile phones, and other devices.

The two major players missing from the list are Research In Motion (NSDQ: RIMM)’s BlackBerry and Apple’s iPhone. Adobe said it has been working with RIM, but they aren’t far enough to announce anything. The iPhone is another matter altogether, and Flash may never wind up on Apple’s touch-screen smartphone.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has said Flash is not good enough for the iPhone because of its resource requirements. Some industry watchers also believe having Flash could potentially detract from the App Store because developers could decide to just create content with Adobe’s technology. Additionally, Apple appears to be placing some bets that HTML 5 can provide iPhone users with Flash-like capabilities like video streaming.
