Nokia 5235 Exclusively for Music

The Nokia 5235 Comes With Music is a low cost touchscreen smartphone with a large display, and 12 or 18 months of free music downloads from Nokia’s Comes With Music service. The handset might look familiar, and that’s because the hardware on the 5235 is identical to the 5230, and it is also closely related to the 5800, 5530 and X6 touchscreen phones.

As with the 5230, the Nokia 5235 comes with a 3.2″ 640 x 360 pixel touchscreen display, microSD expandable memory, Bluetooth, 3.5G support, a 2 megapixel camera, FM radio, multimedia player and a 3.5mm audio connector. There’s a big 1320 mAh battery too which can give up to 5 hours talktime on 3G.

There’s no WiFi support on the 5235, but it does support HSDPA downloads of up to 3.6 Mbps. If you want WiFi, then our recommendation is to go for the 5800 instead. We mentioned the 2 megapixel camera, which is the same unit as found on the 5230. Really, it’s pretty poor when it comes to stills photographs, but it can capture video at up to 640 x 480 pixels at 30 frames per second which is rather good, and certainly good enough for uploading to YouTube.

The Nokia 5235 works with Facebook, MySpace, Ovi and YouTube, and because this is an S60 smartphone then there are a load of applications available for it. The large screen is ideal for web browsing, and it’s remarkable to find a display of this quality in a handset that’s so cheap.

We keep talking about price – so how much is the Nokia 5235? Nokia say that the handset should retail for around €145 before tax and subsidy, around the same as the current 5230. The 5235 offers very good value for money even before you take into account the music downloads, so if you take advantage of Comes With Music then this looks like a real bargain.

It is perhaps worth noting that the 5235 doesn’t come with a memory card in the standard sales package, but it does include a wired headset. Some of Nokia’s data sheets say that it includes a USB cable, whereas others say that it doesn’t.. so if you need a USB cable, check before ordering. Nokia say that the 5235 Comes With Music should be available during Q1 2010 in White or Black colour schemes, each with an ice-blue tinted chrome rim.

Nokia Launched 6700 Classic Gold Edition

Nokia has introduced the 6700 classic Gold Edition, a luxury phone built for users who want class with their mobile device. Based on the 6700 classic, a phone that launched in January, this version features a stainless steel body with an 18-karat gold finish and classic-looking white inlays. Custom wallpapers have been designed to match the phone’s luxurious design.

The 6700 features 3G data connectivity, a 5.0 megapixel camera, and GPS connectivity for use with Nokia Maps. It has not been verified at this time, but it is likely that the phone also features the specifications of the original 6700 classic – based on S40 6th Edition, the original 6700 classic includes Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR and a 2.2-inch QVGA display, as well. An 8GB microSD card and a leather carrying case come included with the Gold Edition.

The Nokia 6700 classic Gold Edition is expected to go on sale in select markets during the first quarter of 2010 for 370 EUR (US$545) before taxes and subsidies.

Nokia Recalls 14 Million Cell Phone Chargers

Nokia has recalled 14 million cell phone chargers manufactured by a third-party supplier, the American Foreign Press reports. The company says that a plastic cover on some models could come loose and expose internal components that could cause injury while the charger is plugged into a live socket. Nokia says no injuries have been reported.

Chargers made by subcontractor BYD, including the AC-3E and AC-3U, manufactured between June 15 and August 9, and the AC-4U, manufactured between April 13 and October 25, could potentially cause electric shock. Europe and North and Latin American markets are affected, though the recall does not concern the UK, China, Britain, Brazil, and Argentina.

Users can exchange their charger for a new one, free of charge, by navigating to Nokia’s charger exchange program.

Nokia planned to shut down its N-Gage gaming platform

Nokia has announced that it is shutting down its N-Gage gaming platform now that it is offering so many games through its Ovi Store. The company has said that current N-Gage games will be still be available for purchase trough the end of September, 2010.

N-Gage community features like N-Gage Arena will be closed at the end of 2010, and Nokia has said that it will try to implement similar functionality in the Ovi Store. The N-Gage platform, Nokia’s first foray into mobile gaming that started in 2002, has been a disappointment for Nokia from the start. The first N-Gage phone was widely panned for its oddball “side-talking” form factor, and the follow-up device did little better. N-Gage games have been available on many other Nokia S60 devices for some time, but still failed to take off. You can read more at the official Nokia N-Gage blog.

Nokia N900 Linux Phone Delayed Until November!

The Nokia N900, being billed as the Finns’ hottest phone, has been delayed until mid November (a month later than originally scheduled). The delay is apparently due to a wait for the feedback of software developers who received 300 pre-production units for testing at the recent Maemo Summit.

A first of its kind for Nokia, the N900 is powered by the Linux-based Maemo 5 operating system. The Mozilla browser breezes through websites (even those peppered with rich Adobe Flash flourishes), letting you enjoy multimedia experiences on the move, while the combo of a pixel-plenty 800 x 480 touchscreen and slide-out Qwerty keyboard give you maximum control.

Maemo Select will let you download the latest apps, themes and wallpapers – including social networking apps and Skype – to its substantial 32GB stomach, with more apps arriving every week. Being an Nseries device, it’s no surprise to find an autofocus 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, A-GPS (with Ovi Maps and geo-tagging), Wi-Fi and HSDPA access, and even an FM transmitter.

The N900 is expected to retail for around $750, excluding subsidies and taxes.

Nokia 7705 Twist Cell Phone for Verizon – Review

When Verizon and Nokia unveiled the 7705 Twist feature phone, with its funky swivel design, we weren’t quite sure what to think. Now that we’ve had a chance to spend some time with this QWERTY-equipped phone, though, we’re quite impressed. Find out why in this review of the Nokia 7705 Twist for Verizon.

Physical Aspects

The Nokia 7705 Twist from Verizon is an oddball of a phone, featuring a nicely sized 2.4-inch display and a swivel-out QWERTY keyboard that’s loaded with shortcuts. The phone itself is housed in a formal combination of piano black plastic and chrome plating, and folds nicely into a small package to easily fit into your pocket or purse.

While closed, the Nokia 7705 Twist from Verizon measures only 68.6mm x 68.6mm x 15mm (2.7in x 2.7in x .59in) and weighs 96.4g (3.4oz), which is quite nice. When unfolded, the phone’s length extends out to 114.3mm (4.5in), which is definitely completely bearable. The plastic build materials are of high quality and the phone feels solid in the hand, with a phenomenally smooth swivel motion.

The front of the 7705 Twist is where you’ll find the modest 2.4-inch QVGA (320×240 pixel) resolution display. This screen is incredibly bright and beautiful, almost leading you to believe it is OLED, when in fact it is only a normal LCD. Below the display is a pair of touch-sensitive softkeys, just above a standard 5-way d-pad with a raised outer ring and massive center button. The ‘CLR’/back button is off to the far left of the d-pad, and is also touch sensitive. In the bottom right corner of the front of the Twist is a large, hollow, chrome ring which serves as the hinge for this swiveling phone. Inside this ring is a multicolored LED light that can be used for a number of notifications, which we’ll cover later.

A small upwards push on the bottom left corner of the front of the phone starts the spring-assisted swivel, which reveals the full QWERTY keyboard. Along the top of the keyboard is a row of shortcuts, bordered on either side by the dedicated end/send keys. These shortcuts include quick access to messaging, music, internet, voice control, speakerphone, and the camera, and prove to be extremely convenient.

The QWERTY keyboard is a uniform grid of tall rectangles, each with a letter and symbol printed in white font against the matte black background, for high visibility. While the keyboard is somewhat cramped, the buttons are easy to press, well spaced, and offer great tactile feedback. The 7705 Twist is definitely one of my favorite QWERTY keyboards ever.

With the phone open, you’ll find the microSD card slot on the right side, covered by an attached door to keep debris out. Just below this is the 2.5mm audio port (most normal headphones use a 3.5mm audio port), which is a shame to find on an otherwise nicely equipped phone. The microphone pinhole is the only thing on the bottom edge of the phone, and the volume rocker and microUSB charging/data port are both located along the left edge.

The 3 megapixel camera on the 7705 Twist is located on the rear of the lower half of the phone, in the top right corner as viewed from behind. The entire back cover snaps off to reveal the small 860mAh battery.

Nokia Tracks Infectious Disease with HealthRadar App

Nokia is providing technology that allows mobile phones to track the spread of infection in real-time in remote locations with an application called HealthRadar, the company said in a blog post yesterday.

HealthRadar, an application for Symbian devices, improves data collection by automatically distributing information from a number of phones to a central server, where it is then aggregated back to local practitioners.

Daily reports are sent to field physicians by SMS. Users can view maps that show disease intensity in geographic locations. Comparisons of current patterns with historical statistics are also available. The software is an exciting and interesting example of how the use of mobile devices brings the power of computing to the real world and gets results.

Nokia’s new Braille Reader application allows blind and visually impaired people to read a discreet SMS using phone vibration.

Nokia has introduced an interesting piece of software, called Nokia Braille Reader. The new application allows blind people to read a discreet SMS using phone vibration. The Nokia Braille Reader application gives SMS for the blind and visually impaired and captures received SMS messages and brings them to the foreground for reading using Braille and tactile feedback. Developed at Nokia Beta Labs, the application has been developed in a joint project between Nokia, Tampere University and the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired.

The Nokia Braille Reader application is an application developed specially for blind people using Nokia mobile phones. The application uses Braille and also a tactile feedback to enable blind people to read SMS messages. Each text message is fed into the application and the characters are converted into braille. Then each character is read out to the user using the vibrating facility of the phone. As braille is a series of raised dots each character can be communicated by changing the vibration to depict raised or not with a whole sequence allowing the user to figure out which character it is, explains Geek.com.

The Nokia Braille Reader application is absolutely free to download and use and is compatible with Nokia devices based on S60 5th Edition, including Nokia N97, 5800 XpressMusic and the newly released N97 mini, 5530, 5230 and X6.

50% Price Cut for Nokia’s N96

Price-cuts like this don’t happen often, and that’s why Univercell’s decision to shave off 50% from the Nokia N96’s price-tag is certainly an eye-catching proposition. The N96, which was priced at Rs. 35,000 is now available at Univercell at Rs. 19,231.

We stumbled across the new price while browsing through Univercell’s website. When we contacted the store, we were informed that the price is a result of a 50% off deal that the store was offering on the phone. It seems like a great deal, which leaves us wondering why Univercell hasn’t publicized it at all.

The N96, if you remember from our review, was launched February last year and sports a 2.8 inch TFT screen, a 5MP camera with LED flash, GPS and Wi-Fi and powered by a 264MHz processor. Also, before the N97, it was Nokia’s flagship model. All in all, for Rs. 19,231, this looks like a steal alright.

AT&T to Sell Nokia’s Social Networking Surge

Yesterday Nokia announced the Surge, a QWERTY-equipped sideways slider that will be available from AT&T starting July 19. It has quad-band GSM/EDGE, 850/1900 WCDMA/HSDPA, and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and FM radios on board. According to Nokia, the Surge is aimed at users of social networks and it offers most forms of messaging, including AT&T’s Video Share service and the ability to post to social networks via the JuiceCaster application. The Surge has 3G, GPS, a 2 megapixel camera, and a Flash-enabled web browser. The Surge runs S60 3rd Edition. It will cost $80 after rebate with new agreement (which requires a $40 voice plan and $30 data plan).
